An Optical Solution!
Dear Friend,
The following story demonstrates God’s blessing upon the ministry of the International ALERT Academy.
Since last October, our IT\Telecom department has been seeking a solution to various fiber optics problems that we are having on campus. Training has been somewhat out of reach, while the cost of having someone come in to take care of the problems has been prohibitive. About four weeks ago we came to a point that something had to be done. In the midst of existing problems some of our facilities crew were working on a water line repair and accidentally cut through one of our fiber trunk lines. Chris began checking on training options to bring he and Nathan up to speed on outdoor fiber repair and testing. While researching prices for a separate project, Chris contacted a company in Dallas and was given a pressure pitch to purchase. Because of the pressure to purchase, Chris was reluctant to deal with this company. He called a friend of the ALERT Academy in Tyler, Texas who had helped him with the alarm systems and through him was able to contact a man in Tyler who could help with the repair for a price. Upon contacting this man, he recommended contacting a woman that he knew in Longview who could possibly help. Chris discovered that the woman worked for the same company that he had rejected out of Dallas. He put her name on his desk and was reluctant to call her because of the previous dealings with this company.
Three days later, after unsuccessful attempts at other options, he received a call from the woman in Longview. She said that the man in Tyler had suggested that she give Chris a call to see what might be needed. As Chris explained our situation the woman was very eager to help. Chris later discovered that she was a Christian and that she had been looking for a way to donate expertise and resources to help a ministry in need. She also mentioned that she lives in a nearby community and passes our campus everyday on her way to work, but was not sure what The ALERT Academy was all about. She was supportive of our ministry and told Chris that she believed she had found the ministry she would like to help. She offered to take a look at our fiber optics problem. The very next week, she and a man from Tyler met together with Chris.
When they arrived, they brought a Fusion Splicer and other equipment that would permanently repair the broken fiber. After a day of training at no cost, Chris and Nathan were able to repair the break in the fiber trunk. To rent the Fusion Splicer usually costs $250 or more per day, not including labor charges. They told Chris they would like to leave the splicer at ALERT until they needed it again so that Chris and Nathan could become proficient in its use and repair another break in the fiber. Both of these individuals brought other equipment that they donated to ALERT. They also promised to return and give further training to Chris and Nathan in fiber troubleshooting to fix the other problems that we have. These people gave, and continue to give, of their time and resources in answer to a long awaited prayer that Chris and Nathan had been asking of the Lord. We can surely see the Hand of the Lord in these events. Chris and Nathan now have the training and the equipment at no cost, essentially for as long as they need it!
We praise God for His answer to this problem and for the fulfilling of His Scripture: “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.” Ephesians 3:20,21
New Birth on a Parking Lot!
A group of our single staff and battalion men went to a well known retail store recently and instead of just shopping, they decided to share the gospel on the parking lot. Many seeds were planted and one young man (worked in the store) received Christ as Savior. Sharing the gospel of Christ and seeing a new life born into the Kingdom is of greater value than any training we can give. It is much sweeter than the “icing on the cake.” I am greatly encouraged that these men are putting their focus on the most important responsibility of the Christian life.
If you are not already, please join our team in prayer and financial support of the many activities that allow us to share the good news of Christ and serve others. Your gift will allow us to continue the work that God has called us to do!

Fire
Dear Friend,
Wildfires are a constant threat in many areas of our nation, especially as we enter into the spring and summer seasons. It is for that purpose, ALERT men were called upon recently to support an area of Texas in reducing the effects (mitigation) that a wildfire could have on their community. ALERT’s task was to clear brush and trim trees of dead branches in Buffalo Gap, an area that boasts of the largest live oak forest in northwest Texas.
In the first two days, thirty-five ALERT men cleared forty acres. The Mayor of the city commented that the men did a remarkable job in just a few days and that the area now resembles a park. One woman wrote, “They did more than just trim trees and brush. They were great examples of how we should serve each other and our community with eagerness and happy hearts.” Jesus said, “But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant” (Matthew 23:11). These men spent a week being servants of the people of Buffalo Gap. In so doing, the name of our Lord was lifted up.
Fresh Troops!
The new Recruits of Basic Training Unit 45 arrived this past Monday to begin their 9-week boot camp. The excitement level was high, as most of our staff, families, and battalion were on hand in the Fieldhouse Gym to welcome them. I observed eagerness on the faces of these new ALERT trainees as they anticipated the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. We briefed them at the beginning using the passage from 2 Timothy 2:1-4, concerning their focus on the Lord Jesus who has called them to be a soldier in His Christian army and how ALERT is a tool that God will use to strengthen their resolve to be disciplined, able to serve others.
The International ALERT Academy covets your involvement in making a difference in the lives of these young men and those they serve. Here are some of our most critical needs for your prayers and support:
- Landscape heavy equipment maintenance person.
- Our deployment funds are at zero! Our last two deployments were funded by our general funds, which are also in need.
- Scholarship funds for: ALERT men seeking training who are – sons of widows; Sons of full-time Christian workers; Young ladies to attend STEP; and, Young men to attend Quest. Each student who requests financial help is screened and obliged to pay a portion of the required costs.
- We are still seeking God’s man to serve in the position of Cadet Commanding Officer.
We are thankful for your friendship with this ministry and pray God’s richest blessings upon you!

Establishing Purpose

Establishing Purposes:
The Strength of a Landmark
Dear Friend,
As 2010 draws to a close, God is centering our hearts on the important issues that define our vision and mission. Many times, God uses funds, or the lack thereof, as a way of redirecting, or refocusing us. We are now in that time of “lack.”
Over time, as we (International ALERT Academy) expanded our ministry opportunities, vision and mission became increasingly cloudy, vague. We find as we get so involved in the “work” of the ministry that we can forget who we are, or lose sight of the foundational reasons as to why we exist.
People First
It is not about programs, but it is about people. It is about the lives of those who set foot on our campus as well as those we serve. If we are not making a difference in the hearts of young people who come here, we will not make a great impact on the lives of those we serve. Anyone can serve! Anyone can place himself/herself in the midst of a crisis, such as a disaster, and do “good” for the people who are suffering. Making a marked difference distinguishes itself in changed hearts and the character-driven determination that exemplifies the life of the ALERT responder. Therefore, as we have strayed somewhat over time, we see the need to refocus our attention on the young people that pass through our doors.
Proverbs 22:28 tells us to, “Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.” I believe this to be a key to drawing upon the foundational vision and mission that was established by Ron Fuhrman (Founder of ALERT) in the early days of ALERT. As I recently read some of his handwriting from those early beginnings, I was able to make some adjustments and course corrections that will direct our goals and strategies. In a recent meeting with our staff, I shared these as our “reestablishment” of our future focus. I now want to share these with you.
Vision:
To disciple courageous young people to be world changers, willing (heart) and capable (skills) to disciple others (opportunity).
Mission:
- Assist young people in clarifying life purpose
- Support fathers in establishing Christ-likeness in their sons and daughters
- Establish a desire to be salt and light in the world
- Equip them with the Word of God
- Provide challenges and experiences to help them be mighty in Spirit
- Dedicated public service and global emergency response
- Cultivate an attitude of life service to God
Within this framework, the International ALERT Academy will have a profound impact on the lives of young people as well as the lives of those who are in need of assistance in the midst of crises. Having our vision and mission at the forefront will strengthen our resolve to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands around the world. As this was shared with our staff, I witnessed a renewed fervor in our people that I have not seen in a long time. We are now set to move forward!
Your assistance through financial gifts has been a major source of our success. We are now in need of those who can come alongside to strengthen our cause for greater ministry around the world. Please pray and seek what God’s direction is for you in helping us accomplish His plan for us.

Mission Underway

Death and Rebirth of a Vision:
Dear Friend,
More than a year ago, the Lord placed in my heart a vision for a “mission program.” Strategies were underway and a program was developed to prepare young people for the mission field. Training was developed, schedules were set, and a coordinator was brought on board to make it happen. Advertising was released and people were beginning to register for this spring of 2010 session. However, I knew in my heart that something was not right. I began seeking the Lord’s answer. Was it the wrong timing? Was it the wrong program? Did I have the wrong leadership in place? As I sought counsel and pondered these questions, I realized that I could not move forward with a program where I did not see God’s hand at work. I began to question why this attempt at developing a mission program failed since I believed that God had placed it in my heart to train young people for missions.
Early this summer, God opened the door to Peru in a way that was unimaginable. Suddenly, I found myself in Peru alongside a team of 20, speaking with government officials, seeing God bring many of them to salvation, and being pressed by them to bring ALERT to Peru. I then realized that God had allowed me to experience the death of a vision so that He could bring it backto life in Peru. Instead of training students for the mission field with noplace to go, we are now developing that program with specific and purposeful training with a place to serve.
Our Next Step:
Four ALERT men will have feet on the ground in Peru during the last week of October. The leaders have asked that our young men bring some ALERT-style training to their students in one of the schools. During the week we plan to lay a foundation for spiritual and character development while teaching them skills such as: lost person search, first aid, CPR, navigation, disaster preparation, and ropes & knots. We will also train them with “drill and ceremony” skills, teaching them to march as a team and preparing
them for a presentation on the last day. Using these skills, we can begin a process of preparing them for service to their country.
Sharing the message of salvation in Jesus Christ will be our over-arching theme throughout all of the training. The examples and testimonies of our ALERT men will be a key to helping them understand the importance of faith in Christ as a basis for being a good servant to their country and to others.
How the Fruit of this Endeavor can Abound to Your Account:
“Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account” Philippians 4:17. Our costs to send these men to Peru are above and beyond our current financial obligations at Big Sandy. At present, our costs for these four men will be approximately $4,000. Costs will increase for the additional men if needed for the event. If you would like to contribute to help us strengthen the work of the Lord in Peru, not only for now, but also for long-term, please make a note with your donation to the:
“Peru Initiative.”
Disaster Relief:
We have had several disaster projects in 2010, some from earlier disasters that have continued needing support from volunteers such as us. Our relief equipment has also reached a point of necessary repairs in order to be ready for the next deployment. Our Disaster Deployment fund has been put to good use and is now depleted. If you would like to help us to be ready for our next call, please make a note on your donation to this effect. Thanks for all that each of you do, whether through financial support, or prayers. Our most needed resource is prayer – that God will use us to make a difference in
the lives of those we serve.

Peru Strategy Underway:
Dear Friend,
Just a few weeks ago I was in Peru with Dr. Bill Gothard and a team that totaled 21 members. One of our purposes for being there was to begin a relationship with the authorities that were seeking godly answers to the challenges that their country faces with its families, and especially with its young people. The power of God was evident as we met with government officials, business leaders, pastors, and missionaries. Not only were the doors of the nation opened wide for many aspects of the ministry to which God has called us, but we continued to see god’s powerful display of blessing as government and business leaders received the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior
throughout our meetings with them.
The message of character, discipline, and service of the ALERT program found its way into the hearts of these leaders. Our current goal is to formulate a strategy that will involve an “ALERT style” program to raise up youth as a vital asset to the spiritual and emergency needs in Peru. We are now planning to send up to six ALERT men in October to begin this process. Although the leaders in Peru have told us they will take care of our needs while in the country, we are in need of approximately $6,000 to cover flight costs for October.
From Questions to Christians!
Our Quest program was a great success as young men were challenged with many difficult situations placing them in a position to make mature decisions. We were praising God as many of these young men made important decisions in their lives, many times resulting in calls home to seek forgiveness and counsel from their parents. Six of these men trusted Christ for salvation during their time here.
Mobile Response Team (MRT):
Our MRT returned from a six-week service, recruiting, and evangelistic trip through more than ten states. They gave testimony of the Lord’s work in their lives through singing and speaking, as well as one-on-one conversations with many. At each location they would set up an ALERT display so that attendees could both hear and see how God is using ALERT to serve nations. Upon returning, several of these men said that this was a highlight of their ALERT experience as they were able to share the gospel, inform people about the ALERT program, and serve on various projects along the way.
We covet your prayers as we seek a mechanic for our landscape department, an auto mechanic, and a “Class B” surface water & waste water treatment person to run our water system on campus.
Please pray for us as we continue forward: repairing roofs, keeping up with landscaping needs, training young people to be servants of Christ, developing strategies for Peru, and continuing to serve others.

Faith-fueled Provisions
Dear Friend,
We praise our Lord for the provision of funds that have come this year to support His work through the ALERT ministry. As we seek to be faithful, He continues to supply the financial resources that are needed to fuel the foundations of our endeavors.
This week we received a gift that will fund the repairs and replacement of deteriorating roofs on many of our buildings. Praise the Lord! As we seek to be good stewards of that gift, we are looking for men with expertise in flat roof repairs that would be willing to come alongside with this endeavor. Please pray how God may use you to help with this project, and if you hear God’s call, please contact us.
A Family in Need
I don’t typically share this next kind of need through the Faithful Endeavors letter, but I would like to lay this one at your feet to consider. We have a family whose son was recently in need of emergency room care and are now left with multiple financial burdens that are above and beyond the insurance level and theirs. Others have covered some already, but there remains nearly $1,300 balance due. If you would like to help with this, please reply through this Faithful Endeavors email.
MRT trek-messanging across the USA
Our Mobile Response Team (MRT) is now on the road. Six men left last week with stops to include: A church in Little Rock, Arkansas; a conference in Montpelier, Ohio; a church in Whitewater, Kansas; and a youth camp in Cuba, New Mexico. Along the route, they also plan to meet with ALERT Cadet groups and provide service to communities as needed. A key aspect of their mission is to come alongside other young men in the churches and ALERT Cadet groups to give vision for future opportunities with ALERT. The entire trip will last about six weeks. Please pray for these men as they sing, serve, and proclaim the message of Christ across our nation, seeking to honor the Lord in all of their travels.

Flood, Search, and Peru
July 5th, 2010
July 5, 2010
Oklahoma City Floods, Lost Person Search, and Peru Initiative
Dear Friend,
On June 14, Oklahoma City experienced extensive flooding causing damage to nearly 170 homes. Many across our nation watched the news as a young girl was rescued from the uncompromising rush of water when she fell victim to its power while trying to help another woman who was trapped in her car.
The young ladies of STEP (Skills Training for Emergency Preparedness) were called into action. State Representative Shane Jett sent the following assessment of the situation: “Morale is low in the face of the loss of almost everything they have worked for…Your organization’s arrival will be a tremendous blessing and will really lift the spirits of this community.”
A team of sixty-eight arrived in northern Oklahoma City on Saturday afternoon and immediately began the house-to-house cleanup. The relief coordinator expressed the discouragement and exhaustion of the local church members who had been working since the water receded: “Encouraging news of the arrival of STEP had lifted their spirits.”
Having spent the previous three weeks growing in character and building confidence in Christ and self, these young ladies met the challenge of meeting the needs of people who suffered great loss by willingly and enthusiastically doing whatever was needed. I was encouraged and filled with joy as I observed the smiling faces of these dedicated young ladies who saw the needs of others as being much more important than themselves.
One family expressed to me, “we had reached a point of exhaustion and discouragement, but these girls have not only met our needs, but have gone above and beyond what we could have asked for.” Another man said to a television news crew, “I have never seen young ladies work so hard.”
Why did they work so hard? To serve others! Their confidence in Christ to perform through them has caused these young ladies to go above and beyond their own personal desires and schedules, bringing hope to others.
While returning from Oklahoma, we received a call to help find a missing person near Quitman, Texas, who went missing the night before. Arriving at the scene, we saw a field covered in fire trucks, police cars, ambulances, and a helicopter. When more than sixty STEP ladies filed out of the bus and vans, forming into teams, the authorities expressed their confidence in what we could do by giving us the command of all search personnel. We divided into three large groups and assigned nearly fifty police and fire personnel under the leadership of three STEP ladies. All worked well together as they began grid searching the wooded areas. The young man was found alive and in good condition. The Incident Commander (and many others) expressed his appreciation for such a “professional group of searchers.” Many who served on the grid lines commented how well the young ladies kept them all moving in an orderly fashion. This is the first STEP group to have done both a disaster deployment and a lost person search during their training.

Peru Initiative
On July 11, Dr. Gothard and I (along with 19 others) will embark upon a new mission opportunity in Peru. Last month, Dr. Gothard met with officials from the Peruvian government who invited us to meet with the President of Peru and to develop training for the young people of their nation. This will be a fact-finding and development mission to determine how ALERT might be able to establish specialized training for these youth. Please pray for God’s hand of blessing and creativity upon us as we seek to serve this nation and bring encouragement to the families and leaders.

Many Challenges More Grace

Many Challenges, More Grace!
Dear friend,
Activation of our dive response team occurred last Friday as
a call came from one of our area police departments requesting help in finding
a safe and other stolen items that were reportedly cast into a lake. Our men
responded and successfully recovered two safes, however, neither of them were
the one reported. We praise God that we were able to find evidence in two other
pending cases.
On Sunday, our dive team was again called upon to assist the
Longview Fire Department’s Dive team in recovering the body of a local teen
that drowned while on a Church outing. These are always tough circumstances and
we continue to pray that God will give us grace to do well in these situations
so that closure can be brought to the families. We grieve over these kinds of
responses, but we are thankful that God has called us to be of assistance to
minister to others in this way. Please pray for our men as they face many such
difficult situations throughout the year.
This past week, Janet and I spent several days at the Texas
Hurricane Conference in McAllen, Texas, where we gained more information about
responses. We were able to connect with many of those officials that will be
the ones calling us during one of these events. The conference turned out to be
one of a somber nature as we all mourned the loss of our Texas State Emergency
Coordinator who passed on Sunday. Governor Rick Perry and other state officials
eulogized Chief Jack Colley as a man that we all respected and loved. ALERT has
had a close relationship with him and we will miss him. Please pray for his
family.
God desires to grow us through trials!
The International ALERT Academy faces a difficult challenge
each year, from May through the end of June, when our income is low, and we
greatly depend on the Lord for necessary provisions to keep us going. We are in
the midst of it now, and are faced with a trial that is beyond our ability to
fulfill through programs and other on-campus income sources. We are in a
crisis, yet, in the midst of it, God is giving us even more opportunities to
serve others. We know God will provide for what He places in front of us to do,
but we don’t always know how it will come. Please pray whether our Lord will
lead you to support the work and ministry of ALERT during this challenging
time, but more than anything, pray for us!
“That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than
of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto
praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.” I Peter 1:7

God Working In Us

God’s Ongoing Work
Dear friend,
Managing, training, and activating our resources for public
service and global emergency response may be a significant mission to
accomplish, however, there can be no greater outcome than that of lives
surrendered to the Lord Jesus Christ. We are in our sixth week of Basic
Training, and five men have placed their trust in Christ for salvation. We
praise God for His work in their lives.
Currently we have men in Haiti and southern Wisconsin. A
five-man team cleared a road yesterday in a county that was hit by strong winds
that brought down trees across the area. We have also had some contact with
people in Nashville, Tennessee and may soon be sending men to help with the
flood clean up.
Excerpt from our Haiti team report from Sgt. Bryan Winchell:
“We are staying about 10 miles northwest of Port-Au-Prince,
in a rural area at the base of the mountains and within easy sight of the
ocean. Housing consists of a circus tent with the team from Friend Ships on a compound
owned by Global Outreach. Also here on the compound is Samaritan’s Purse and
Rescue 24, a mobile clinic outreach program put on by the Southern Baptist Men
of South Carolina. Just outside the compound is the Haitian Academy/Central
Hospital, a tiny hospital and med school run by Dr. Duvall.”
“This week the ALERT men have been deploying medical units
with Rescue 24 and Samaritan’s Purse to assist with the mobile clinics. We have
been assisting and learning from Dr. Duval at the Haitian Academy each day (an
amazing opportunity to learn from a Haitian believer who went to med school in
the US to come back and teach/treat his local people). Several of our men
have been assisting at a local burn clinic as well, since burns are a very
common injury in Haiti due to lots of children getting burned in cooking fires,
and adults while welding/riding motorcycles. ALERT men have also been
assisting the Friend Ships crew with painting buildings on the compound and
working on reaching out to the people in the nearby village of Simonette. This
consists of cleaning up their beach, playing with children, street preaching,
learning the Creole language, and playing soccer with the men. We’ve seen
several pray to trust Jesus already this week.”
“We have had several opportunities to foray out into
Port-Au-Prince to see what urban Haiti is like and to deliver a handmade
wheelchair to a disabled man. Here is a link to an online photo gallery; we’ll
be trying to keep adding several photos each day.”

“It has been incredible to see God at work this week,
arranging unexpected opportunities for outreach and serving. The simplicity of
life has been both challenging and rewarding, while allowing for extended times
of personal prayer/study/Bible reading for all of us. I know I have been
personally impacted by the necessity here to depend on God for direction and
fulfillment.”
“Thank you for your prayers. Please continue to pray for
opportunities to utilize our team effectively and that all of us would continue
allowing God to work in our lives through this time.”
For the entire team, Sgt. Bryan Winchell
Ways you can pray for current needs at the International
ALERT Academy:
Our fleet of deployment vans is deteriorating. God provided
these vans many years ago through several donors and they have carried our men
to many disasters and other projects across the country, proving themselves to
be a great blessing and asset for carrying forth the work of our mission. But
now, we are lacking enough to fulfill future deployment needs. Of the remaining
roadworthy vans, two are just less than 100,000 miles; three are at the 200,000-mile
range; two at nearly 350,000. Several vans have been removed from the fleet
this past year due to high mileage and lack of dependability.
Several of our flat-roof buildings have deteriorated to the
point of needing roof replacement to eliminate the decline of our infrastructure
to these.
Please pray for these and our continuing general (most
needed) and disaster needs.

Worth a thousand words!
Dear friend,
Jesus used analogies and word pictures to help us grasp the
full meaning and thrust of the Christian life and the Biblical principles by
which we are to conduct ourselves. Last week I reported on our “faithful
endeavors” in Haiti, but did not have pictures at the time. Some pictures have
arrived and I would now like to share with you this brief update in visual
form.
The men were ready to serve as they embarked upon their
journey to Haiti.

Two of our men are shown with the doctor and the mom after
assisting in the delivery of the new baby.

The new mom honored the ALERT men when she insisted that
they name the baby. After several men discussed it, they named her Esther.

They were all smiles as they posed with the mom and baby.

Our medics were also involved with the daily medical needs
of adults and children as they continued to seek help at the medical clinic.

We praise God for the opportunity to touch so many lives and
we thank each of you who have supported this work of the Lord during a time of
great need.
