Student Testimonials

“Every day at ALERT, I learn to depend on Christ more. I’ve learned there is always room to grow, that I don’t have all the answers, and most importantly, that it is my walk with Him that really matters.”

Kenjie S.  |  Unit 66

“Before I came to the ALERT program, my life was without direction and purpose. I would spend my time working dead-end jobs and playing video games, and occasionally participating in outdoor activities if invited. After going through Basic training, I saw a glimpse of what I could be if I wanted to change. Over my time at ALERT, I have seen God’s grace to me as my faith and reliance on Him grew. I can say for certain that ALERT has changed my life for the better in terms of leadership, discipline, physical strength, and so much more. I will forever be grateful to this program and the men in it.”

Joshua L.  |  Unit 64

“The unique tensions and challenges that I faced here forced me to rely on God and get out of my comfort zone. It taught me to behave with conviction, think with clarity, and speak with authority. ALERT gave me a valuable perspective about life, God, and people that I never had before.”

Len N.  |  Unit 61

EMT scenarios

When an emergency happens or lives are at stake, will you be ready? ALERT’s EMT program takes students through a focused course on pre-hospital emergency care that includes two weeks of clinical training in the emergency room and on an ambulance. In addition, practical scenarios throughout the course simulate the experience of working in the field and help prepare students for a career in emergency medicine.

The next EMT course starts August 31. For more information, or to register, visit our website at the link in our bio.

Daily inspection

Though many things in Basic Training are unknown and come as a surprise to the recruits, one thing they can count on are inspections. The inspection standard is extremely high. Clothes must be folded perfectly, and placed in the drawers correctly. Mirrors and windows must not have a single streak. Every grain of sand and every speck of dust that gets missed counts against the .

Why do we train this way? Is there any practical application to this standard of cleaning? The point of the whole exercise is to teach teamwork, attention to detail, and perseverance in seemingly impossible situations. These lessons serve every ALERT man for the rest of his life, whether it's walking through a tough season as a father, dealing with difficult people at church, or working a demanding job. Part of our ethos is that training equips a man, and that is why we do daily and Saturday Inspection and many other aspects of our program.

Alumni dive classes

Do you miss your days in the Battalion, or wish you had taken that one class while you were here? Are your single ALERT man days behind you, but you still want to refresh your skills? ALERT’s alumni dive classes are designed for men who want to earn additional diving certifications or refresh their skills outside the Battalion training schedule. Each week-long class is designed to complete one certification course, and can be taken either as a new student or to recertify.

This summer we will be running two dive classes, Rescue Diver (here on campus in Big Sandy, TX), and Nitrox Diver (in Panama City, FL). The classes are open to all ALERT alumni, but do require additional prerequisites, which are noted on the website. Visit our website at the link in our bio for the dates, more course details, and to register.

They say that in the Southwoods the water's mighty fine,
It looks a little muddy and tastes like turpentine.

Chorus
Oh Mom I wanna go home,
But they won't let me go home.
Woe oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh, hey!

They say that in the Southwoods inspections are the best,
When Captain comes along we hit the leaning rest.

Chorus

They say that in the Southwoods the PT's mighty fine,
The one that we did yesterday 'bout killed a friend of mine,

Chorus

They say that in the Southwoods the mail it is great,
Today I got a letter dated 1988.

Chorus

They say that in the Southwoods the hikes are mighty fine,
Last night we had 10 recruits, now we've only nine.

Chorus

They say that in the Southwoods the showers are mighty fine,
We've each got 30 seconds to get off all the grime.

Chorus

They say that in the Southwoods the barracks are mighty nice,
But they are infested with spiders, ants, and mice.

"If we have deep-seated fears that God does not really love us (as many Christians have), we can only go so far in growing nearer to God. There will come a point at which we will fear to trust Him any further because we cannot be sure of His love. When we look at ourselves, or our own faith, or our circumstances we will never be free from those lurking fears. Satan will see to that. But when we lift up our eyes and look on the cross we find the final persuasion that God is gracious towards us. How can He be against us when all His wrath against us fell upon Christ? How can He fail to care for us when He gave the only Son He had for our sake? How can we doubt Him when He has given us evidence of His love sufficient to banish all doubts?"
